Scope and Contents

The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Records document the creation and activities of the IU Center on Philanthropy and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. The records show the close relationship of the center and school to national and international organizations involved in the study of philanthropy and in programs that promote a greater understanding of philanthropy or the use of best practices in philanthropic endeavors.

Biographical / Historical

Planning for the IU Center on Philanthropy (COP) began in 1986, and it was officially established in 1987 with IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor Howard Schaller serving as interim director. The Fund Raising School, founded by Henry Rosso in San Francisco in 1974, moved to Indiana in 1987 and became affiliated with the Center. In 1988 Robert Payton became the Center's first full-time executive director in 1988. In 1991 the Center and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs started the Master of Public Affairs in Nonprofit Management degree program. In 1993, Warren Ilchman became the Center's executive director. That same year the Center launched its Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies degree program in the School of Liberal Arts. Eugene Tempel became the executive director in 1997. The Lake Institute on Faith and Giving was established at the Center in 2002, and the Women's Philanthropy Institute became part of the Center in 2004. That same year the Ph.D. program in Philanthropic Studies admitted its first students. Patrick Rooney became the executive director in 2009. The following year the Bachelor of Arts in Philanthropic Studies degree program was launched. The creation of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy was approved in 2012, and Eugene Tempel was named founding dean; the school was inaugurated in 2013. In 2015 Amir Pasic became dean of the school, and the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy was established.

Overview

The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University (COP) was established at IUPUI in 1987.The Center began offering academic courses in 1988. The Center also conducted research in various aspects of philanthropy and worked with other academic centers around the country involved in Philanthropic Studies on projects designed to educate the public about philanthropy and to increase philanthropic activity. In 2012 the IU Board of Trustees voted to establish the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, and the school was formally inaugurated in 2013.

The records in this collection detail the academic, research, and service activities of the school and document its relationship to other academic institutions and organizations involved in philanthropy and philanthropic studies. The records include correspondence, minutes, reports, and publications.

This collection is divided into 23 series: Director/Dean records, containing the correspondence and speeches of the executive directors and deans; Board of Governors/National Board of Visitors records, containing minutes and correspondence relating to two advisory groups for the Center and school; Committees, containing the correspondence and minutes of administrative committees; Academic Programs contains materials about the degree programs in Philanthropic Studies; Projects contains correspondence, publications, and other records relating to research and service projects; Programs and Events contains records relating to annual symposia, lectures, visits and other types of public activities;The Fund Raising School contains class schedules and course descriptions; Women's Philanthropy Institute contains presentations, publications, correspondence; Lake Family Institute contains correspondence and publications; Community Foundations Institute contains correspondence relating to the Institute; Development Office Records contains the records of the Center's fund raising office (the records are restricted);Grantmakers Institute includes correpondence with an organization for funding organizations; Faculty Records contains correspondence and publications; Student Records contain materials relating to Philanthropic Studies students (some material may be restricted); Alumni Records contain information about Philanthropic Studies alumni; Publications includes publications published by Center on Philanthropy and relevant publications from related organizations; Foundations includes correspondence between the Center and various foundations, much of it relating to grants made to the Center; Related Organizations contains correspondence and publications between the Center and other academic units and organizations around the country that study philanthropy or are engaged in philanthropic activites; Administrative Records contain general correspondence and other materials from the office of the Executive Director/Dean; IUPUI materials includes correspondence and publications from various units within IUPUI; IU Materials contains correspondence, publications and other material from within the Indiana University system; Photographs are from the Center and the Fund Raising School, and many are not identified; Audio-Visual Materials are video and audio tapes in a variety of formats.
