Biographical / Historical
The Filer Commission contracted James N. Morgan to conduct the National Study of Philanthropy (ICPSR 7496), the first extensive household-level survey on charitable giving. The survey was fielded in 1974 in two slightly different versions: the Survey Research Council version and the Census version, yielding two comparable datasets. The purpose of the study, articluated in early 1974, was simply "to find out Who is giving What to Whom and Why." Morgan was particularly interested identifying the "why" through examining past changes in giving, present level of giving, and future plans for giving filtered through different demographic lenses.
The data by design overrepresent the highest earners in both samples, and are thus particularly useful for examining this segment of the population.
