Biographical / Historical
The Urban Institute was founded by Lyndon Johnson in 1968 to study the American city and its residents, and to evaluate the efficacy of social programs in ameliorating the urban social and economic problems. The Urban Institute was instrumental in demonstrating the efficacy of housing vouchers in the wake of Richard Nixon's halt of subsidized housing construction.
Researchers at the Urban Institute have continued to explore the ways in which the policies of various administrations have impacted urban life and well-being.

Appraisal
Some items were removed from the collection and were cataloged for inclusion in the Payton Philanthropic Studies Library. Duplicate materials and multiple copies were deaccessioned. The materials held in the Payton Library can be searched at iucat.iu.edu.
